The Development of Applied Physiology

The Development of Applied Physiology

Applied Physiology (AP) is a specialised branch of kinesiology created to bring together the wisdom of Eastern medicine, modern physiology, and innovative stress-management techniques. Over the past four decades, it has grown into a comprehensive system of study and practice, guiding thousands of practitioners worldwide.

The Vision of Richard D. Utt

Applied Physiology was founded in the 1980s by Richard D. Utt (1949–2011), a pioneering researcher and teacher. Richard’s vision was to create a kinesiology system that respected the depth of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) while remaining accessible and practical for modern students and practitioners.

He introduced key innovations such as:

  • The Holographic Model of Muscle Monitoring — seeing the body as an interconnected system.
  • The Seven Element Theory — linking elemental patterns with stress responses.
  • Advanced formatting methods — allowing practitioners to work precisely with specific stress states.
  • Integration of sound, colour, nutrition, and flower essences — expanding the sensory and biochemical pathways available for balancing.

Over his lifetime, Richard created 28 books of training manuals and resources, building the foundation for an entire diploma program. His original course methodology extended to 650 hours of training, forming the framework of what became the IIAP Diploma, now recognised internationally.

Richard believed kinesiology was not only about techniques, but about cultivating compassion, awareness, and a deeper respect for human potential.

This is the original IIAP school and office in Tucson, Arizona, where it all began in 2000.

Carrying the Work Forward: Sherril Taylor

Sherril Taylor was fortunate to study directly with Richard Utt and now carries forward his vision as Lead Trainer and international distributor of AP resources. Building on Richard’s foundation, Sherril has expanded the original 650-hour Diploma to a comprehensive 850-hour training program, designed to meet the needs of contemporary students in Australia, India, and worldwide.

As a continuation of Richard’s legacy, Sherril has created 15 additional training manuals and resources, extending his vision into new areas and ensuring Applied Physiology remains a dynamic and relevant system of study.

Her contributions include:

  • Writing and revising the instructional workbooks for Richard’s core material, ensuring consistency, clarity, and accessibility for students.
  • Developing and expanding Holograms — creating new systems to deepen the holographic approach to balancing.
  • Expanded Flower Essences — updating and extending essence work to suit modern times and contemporary students.
  • Scent Holograms — a unique system of working with essential oils and meridians.
  • Expanded Muscle work – Muscles of the feet and hands
  • Professional Training Standards — creating clear diploma pathways and instructor agreements to support both practitioners and teachers.

Sherril’s focus is on nurturing confident, compassionate kinesiologists who can use Applied Physiology to help clients manage stress, restore balance, and rediscover their own capacity for healing.

The Spirit of Applied Physiology

From its beginnings with Richard Utt to its current development under Sherril Taylor, Applied Physiology has always carried the same guiding principles:

  • Respect for the client’s innate wisdom.
  • A holistic view of the body, mind, and spirit.
  • The belief that stress can be transformed into greater awareness, resilience, and wellbeing.

As Applied Physiology continues to grow, its community of practitioners and instructors remains dedicated to sharing these values — supporting clients, students, and future teachers around the world.
