Applied Physiology is an advanced stream of kinesiology that embraces the whole human experience—physical, emotional, and energetic. It is based in muscle science, guided by ethical practice, and shaped by mindful observation.
At its essence, Applied Physiology helps to release energy blockages and ease the emotional charges that go with them. As these stresses shift, the body has the chance to restore its physiology and anatomy to their natural state of balance and vitality.
Where Applied Physiology Began
Applied Physiology was created by Richard D. Utt, whose personal journey of illness and recovery inspired him to explore kinesiology at a deeper level. With a background in engineering and a passion for healing, Richard brought new insights to the field. He developed unique models such as holographic meridian techniques and expanded the traditional Five-Element system into Seven Elements, allowing us to see the human system in a more complete and interconnected way.
Many of the advanced kinesiology modalities taught worldwide today have their roots in his pioneering work, yet Applied Physiology continues to stand strongly as a discipline in its own right.
How It Works
Practitioners use muscle monitoring to listen to the body. In Applied Physiology, this isn’t limited to one position or a single test—the muscle is checked in different states to reveal more detail about the stress held in the system. We also use holographic assessment, which looks at how one meridian interacts with another, showing exactly where the priority imbalance lies.
Alarm points and subtle feedback from the body guide us step by step. In this way, the body itself—sometimes described as a living “bio-computer”—shows the way forward.
What Happens in a Session
Applied Physiology offers a wide and flexible set of corrections. Depending on what is needed in the moment, a practitioner might use acupressure, sound through tuning forks, flower essences, gentle structural or cranial realignment, reflex points, colour, massage, or nutritional support.
A signature part of Applied Physiology is the Seven Chi Keys, where each of the seven major chakras is balanced in depth through acupressure and other tools. Other advanced holograms, such as the Tibetan Figure-8 and Acu-touch methods, extend the work even further into subtle and electromagnetic balancing.
Throughout the session, the client is not a passive recipient but an active participant in their healing. With mindful awareness and therapeutic communication, practitioner and client work together to explore the body’s messages and open the way for meaningful change.
Why People Choose Applied Physiology
Because stress plays such a major role in health, Applied Physiology addresses it across many levels—emotional, physical, energetic, and even cellular. Clients often describe a sense of deep relaxation, greater clarity, emotional release, and renewed vitality after a session. For some, it brings new insights into life patterns; for others, it supports specific challenges such as pain, fatigue, or recurring stress.
The changes are always unique, because each session is customised for the individual. No two people, and no two moments, are ever the same.
A Pathway to Wholeness
Applied Physiology is more than a therapeutic technique. It is a journey of rediscovering the qualities within us—trust, acceptance, compassion, vitality—that support both health and personal potential.
At IIAP, we see Applied Physiology as a key to wholeness. It empowers people to care for themselves, to embrace healing as a choice, and to live from the deeper essence of love and vitality that is already present in every one of us.
A Scientific Perspective
Although Applied Physiology was born from kinesiology and natural health practice, some of its models resonate with modern scientific ideas. Researchers have explored how meridians might act like wave-conducting channels in the body, carrying signals through connective tissue and fascia. Others suggest that information theory and energy dynamics may help explain the patterns revealed in meridian systems.
This is why Applied Physiology is often described as a “sophisticated and innovative” kinesiology system: it bridges ancient wisdom with contemporary frameworks, offering a practical way to integrate the physical, emotional, and energetic dimensions of health. It invites us to understand the body not only as chemistry and structure, but also as a living system of communication, resonance, and self-organisation.
